When it comes to planning, most couples first select a venue for the wedding and then determine where they’ll spend their honeymoon. But for some, it’s a single decision.
Destination weddings are dramatic, beautiful, and also in some ways, more convenient for the bride and groom. While there is some risk that less guests will be able to come, for some, destination weddings allow a couple to focus more on their wedding and worry less about planning the honeymoon since they won’t have to travel again.
But if you do opt for a destination wedding, it’s important to select a gown that fits the venue. Princess ball gowns may be gorgeous, but destination weddings, especially beach ones, require more breathable material.

1. Ditch heavy material for lightweight fabrics: Heavy material is not only harder to navigate, it’s a nightmare for warm, humid weather and sandy terrain. Look for gowns made with crepe, charmeuse, chiffon, or organza. What to avoid? Satin, lots of tulle, taffeta and brocade are generally not great choices.
2. Opt for a detail skirt instead of a long train: As elegant as a long train can be, it can be a big mess on a beach, between the sand and wind. Instead of tripping down the aisle, try to get the same effect instead with an intricately detailed skirt. For a bohemian look, try a netted, sheer illusion skirt.
3. Evoke natural beauty with an elongated neckline: Deep necklines are often flattering, but they’re and especially great fit for beach weddings. But instead of a strapless or sleeved look, opt for straps. The look is not only perfect for the beach, but it’s practical, keeping your dress in place but also great for hot days. Thin spaghetti straps exude a casually elegant look: we love especially paired with an embroidered sweetheart bodice, or beaded trim. For a bustier bride who wants just a little extra support, slightly thicker straps offer that extra coverage but still have that beachy vibe. Tapered embroidered straps or illusion and jeweled, these are both great options.
4. Fitted works too: Think a flow, light skirt is your only option? In fact, fitted trumpet and mermaid gowns are great picks because you won’t have to worry so much about the wind. Just make sure you opt for an airy bodice for breath ability. A great example is this ruched bodice ivory trumpet. With a strapless, sweetheart neckline and simple design, it’s not much fuss and high on elegance.
